Mike, as I have said before, the amateur radio bands , in particular
the 50MHz and 144MHz bands are a  good place to listen for news on
current state of propagation.
Eg. if a SpE happens all hell breaks loose!
Tropo ducts, meteor events, allsorts are well spoted there.

err, I should say that such is the case in Europe, I expect your
amateurs over there are equally attentive to such things ?
You might try monitoring DxCluster spots ( amateur packet radio ).
There is a DxCluster mirror on the internet as well, email me if you
want details, I dont have its url directly to hand at the moment.
