Re: (meteorobs) Leonids in the news

This question about whether inviting people to a Leonid observing party will
only invite disappointment started me thinking about why I've been lurking on
this list for a year now. I once gave a presentation on Comet Khoutek to my
Intro to Speech class about what a fantastic free sky show would soon be
coming. Probably the only person I persuaded was myself, but I have had a
decades long interest in the night sky that I largely trace to the research I
did on that speech.

If one lowers the expectations enough I would think you'd only get the folks
already somewhat interested in the night sky. As was pointed out, there are
plenty of things to marvel over while waiting for that fireball. (Though it
would be easier if it was the middle of August!)

Also, thanks to the list for motivating me to take the family to a very dark
area for the Perseids. We often go to the Siskiyou mountains to
watch...except when the moon is bright. We would have watched from the
backyard this time, but I decided to head for the mountains and stay up until
the moon went down and got to see the Aurora for the first time in 25 years.
