(meteorobs) Slightly OT - 50MM lenses for meteor photography

Hello all,

I've been trying to decide which fast 50/55mm lens to upgrade to,and have
started a thread on a photography forum here to try and get ideas from the
professional photographic community:

http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=003QSS

The thread will only be available for around 24hrs more(since its been
posted to the un-archived forum).

So far the most promising suggestion i think has been the Contax Carl Zeiss
Planar T* 50/1.4 ....which seems very reasonable for its high spec. Perhaps
someone on here has tried this lens in the past ?

Of corse it is not an Aspherical lens so will not be as corrected for coma
as the other lenses... but i think this will be outweighed by its
performance in other departments.

I have also found an adaptor to attach the lens to canon EOS mount
cameras, thus saving me buying an expensive Contax body(see
http://www.bobshell.com/store/products/g-adapt-01.htm )... but i'm not sure
that any EOS bodies are suitable for meteor photography(something i have to
investigate further),and there may also be the possibility of using a
second lens/body adaptor in conjunction with the first to allow the lens to
be attached to an earlier mount with more astro-photography friendly
bodies, again i have to investigate this!

Basically i have it narrowed down to these lenses :

1. Contax Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50/1.4

2. Canon FD 50/1.2 L

3. CANON 50MM F1.4 SSC

Please also ignore an inaccurate statement i made to the effect that the
Nikkor 50/1.8 i am currently using is not "sharp enough" for this type of
work... it is fairly sharp wide open, but perhaps just a little soft in the
corners... I just want something that wont be much less sharper when opened
up a bit more!

Leo
